Abamectin resistance in Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae): selection, cross-resistance and stability of resistance Neotropical Entomology
Sato,Mário E.; Silva,Marcos Z. da; Raga,Adalton; Souza Filho,Miguel F. de.
Studies on artificial laboratory selections with abamectin, cross-resistance relationships, and stability of resistance were carried out with Tetranychus urticae Koch to provide basic information for an abamectin resistance management program. Selections for resistance and susceptibility to abamectin were performed in a population of T. urticae, collected from a commercial strawberry field in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. After five selections for resistance and five selections for susceptibility, susceptible (S) and resistant (R) strains of T. urticae to abamectin were obtained. The resistance ratio (R/S) at the LC50 reached 342-fold values. The toxicity of eight acaricides was evaluated in the R and S strains, observing significant differences (at...

Bioactivity of the organic extracts of Annona vepretorum on Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) PAB
Fernandes,Maria Herlândia de Araújo; Menezes,Karen Oliveira de; Souza,Adriana Maria de; Almeida,Jackson Roberto Guedes da Silva; Oliveira,José Eudes de Morais; Gervásio,Rita de Cássia Rodrigues Gonçalves.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the lethal and sublethal toxicity of hexane and methanolic extracts from the leaves of Annona vepretorum (Annonaceae) on Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae). The methanolic extract toxicity was evaluated by Potter tower application (topical + residual effect) and by immersion of Canavalia ensiformis leaf disks in the extract solution (residual contact effect). The hexane extract toxicity was evaluated exclusively through residual contact effect. Sublethal effects of the methanolic extract were evaluated through LC50 on the females. Mite preference for feeding and oviposition was evaluated by multiple choice tests, between the control and the extract concentrations, using the hexane and methanolic...

Comparison and Characterization of Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Bulbs Extracts and Their Effect on Mortality and Repellency of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Hincapié Ll,Carlos Augusto; López P,Gloria Eugenia; Torres Ch,Ricardo.
Tetranychus urticae Koch is a pest that causes great economic losses because it attacks a wide range of host plants. Also, some populations have developed resistance against commercial acaricides. This work compares different extracts from garlic (Allium sativum L.) bulbs measuring their toxicity and repellency effects on T. urticae. Extracts were obtained using as solvents CO2 in supercritical conditions (CSC), ethanol and petroleum ether using soxhlet and soaking methods and soaking in water. The supercritical fluid extraction technique allows for obtaining extracts at low temperature using high pressures, avoiding compound degradation and making possible solvent separation by exposing the extract at room temperature. Mites were bred on bean plants...

DEVELOPMENT OF Tetranychus urticae KOCH (ACARI: TETRANYCHIDAE) IN DIFFERENT STRAWBERRY CULTIVARS Rev. Bras. Frutic.
KARLEC,FÁBIO; DUARTE,ADRIANE DA FONSECA; OLIVEIRA,ANA CLÁUDIA BARNECHE DE; CUNHA,UEMERSON SILVA DA.
ABSTRACT Two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is considered the main pest in strawberry crop. The control of this species is hampered by the low efficiency of products currently used, occurrence of populations resistant to acaricides and high reproductive potential of this pest. This leads to the use of pesticides and increased agrochemical residues in fruits. The use of resistant cultivars is considered the ideal control method because they maintain mite populations below levels of economic damage, minimize the environmental impact of pesticides at no extra cost to the farmer, and serve as an auxiliary tool in integrated pest management. In this sense, this study evaluated the resistance of strawberry cultivars to T. urticae by studying the...

Vicentini,Victor Bernardo; Pratissoli,Dirceu; Queiroz,Vagner Tebaldi de; Costa,Adilson Vidal; Pinheiro,Patrícia Fontes; Zinger,Fernando Domingo; Rondelli,Vando Miossi.
Plant extracts have been studied as a promising source of natural insecticides. This study assessed the effect of the ethanol extract of Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt (citronella grass) in comparison with an insecticide containing azadirachtin (ICA) on mortality and number of eggs of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) in laboratory conditions. For the tests, the mites were sprayed with the aid of a Potter spray tower. To assess the mortality of females, LC50 value for extract of citronella grass and ICA was, respectively, 2.63 and 2.83%. With respect to the number of eggs, the greatest reduction was observed at a concentration of 5% for the evaluation period of 120h, both for the extract of citronella grass (86%) and for ICA (81%). These...

Functional response of Phytoseiulus macropilis under different Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Phytoseiidae, Tetranychidae) population density in laboratory Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ferla,Noeli Juarez; Marchetti,Marla; Johann,Liana; Haetinger,Claus.
We tested the functional response of the phytoseiid predator Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks, 1904) to different population densities of Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1836 (the two-spotted spider mite - TSSM) in the laboratory. We evaluated the curve that best fits the data obtained, based on the reduced X². The predators were obtained from leaves of Oso Grande strawberries at the municipality of Bom Princípio, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Fifteen seemingly healthy females of P. macropilis were randomly chosen and individualized in each of the arenas with different TSSM densities. The following prey densities were tested: 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 35, 45, 55, 70 and 125 females. The tests were performed in a germination chamber with photoperiod of 12 hours...

Optimization of spray deposition and Tetranychus urticae control with air assisted and electrostatic sprayer Scientia Agricola
Cerqueira,Denise Tourino Rezende de; Raetano,Carlos Gilberto; Pogetto,Mario Henrique Ferreira do Amaral Dal; Carvalho,Marina Mouzinho; Prado,Evandro Pereira; Costa,Saulo Ítalo de Almeida; Moreira,Caio Alexandre Ferreira.
ABSTRACT: Improved spray deposition can be attained by electrostatically charging spray droplets, which increases the attraction of droplets to plants and decreases operator exposure to pesticide and losses to the environment. However, this technique alone is not sufficient to achieve desirable penetration of the spray solution into the crop canopy; thus, air assistance can be added to the electrostatic spraying to further improve spray deposition. This study was conducted to compare different spraying technologies on spray deposition and two-spotted spider mite control in cut chrysanthemum. Treatments included in the study were: conventional TJ 8003 double flat fan nozzles, conventional TXVK-3 hollow cone nozzles, semi-stationary motorized jet launched...

Salicylic acid: resistance inducer to two-spotted spider mite in strawberry crop Horticultura Brasileira
Favaro,Renata; Resende,Juliano Tadeu V; Gabriel,André; Zeist,André R; Cordeiro,Ely Cristina N; Favaro Júnior,Jorge Luís.
ABSTRACT The strawberry is susceptible to several pests which cause a reduction in productivity. The use of mechanisms which repel or prevent these pests to establish, represent a sustainable environmental technology to reduce the frequency of agrochemical use. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid (SA) on resistance induction against two-spotted spider mite in strawberry cultivars (Aromas and Sweet Charlie). Five concentrations of SA (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg L-1) were tested in order to verify the antixenosis effects. In SA concentration of 50 mg L-1, a reduced number of mites in the two strawberry cultivars was noticed. For the number of eggs deposited on leaflet, we verified an effect of SA concentration...
